I need some help
-
Friday, November 06, 2009 3:55 PM
I will be getting back into the equestrian world in a week or so! I am sooooooooooo excited. A local farm is looking for an exercise rider for retired show horses, and I think I'm the one they picked! They will pay with experience and teaching me to train my own dressage horse, and maybe throw in some jumping. Which is fabulous! I can't even say how excited I am. My concern is that I do not have any boots. I will be buying some paddock boots, as they are cheaper, but I was thinking maybe I could get some Wellies to substitute as tall boots....any thoughts? Do you think they will work? Please tell me what you think I should do. Also, does anyone know of a place I can get some breeches at a low price? Thanks for any help! Sarah

Hi there and welcome!! I've never had Wellies myself, but I did have some paddock boots..... there are a ton of them out there, I had some Ariats, they were not cheap but they were the most comfortable boot I'd ever worn. And for breeches...perhaps you could search online? Stateline Tack may have some.... http://www.statelinetack.com/ Good luck and let us know how it goes for you! Sounds very exciting!!

Congrats on your return to horses. I had them all my life, then had kids and was horseless for about 12 yrs. Finally convinced hubby that I needed horses in my life! I know your excitement :) I use jodphur/paddock boots with half chaps (very comfortable) and easy for me to get on and off. I have one pair of breeches that only come out for showing :) The rest of the time I ride in comfortable jeans, tucked into my half chaps and that works just fine. Many of the online tack stores sell breeches for good prices but you need to know your size to order.

You can wear any tight pants just for the ride at home stuff. I have cotton pants from Walmart, black and tan that I use. Breeches are mostly for show unless you feel you should maintain a certain level of attire. Are you going to clean stalls? That affects your footwear choices greatly. Our community college (which has an equine science program) has a tack sale in January. Folks commission a table and sell clothes and boots as well as tack. I like Jeffers Equine but I have no idea if they sell breeches or boots. I got my breeches at a local tack shop that is now out of business.

I don't think Wellies will do for tall boots. I'm picturing a muck-boot, unless I'm mistaken. You need a better defined heel for safety and the toe will probably be too big. I guess you COULD if the heel is very well defined, not just a blend from sole to heel, you know? Plus the rubber seems like it would stick to the stirrup. The key is something that will come out of the stirrup if you come off the horse. Horse.com has some inexpensive rubber ones, if you aren't in too hot of a climate. What size? I'd try a 2nd hand tack sale for inexpensive breeches. You can usually find some pretty low priced stuff at the online stores. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I got a chance to do to the Dover store in NH. (Thanks Tanya!!!) I got some great breeches from the bargain basement that need a slight repair.
